So You Want To Work From Home?

An Introduction to Working from Home

Ask anyone to choose their perfect job and working from home would come high on their wish list. Whether home working is an option provided by your workplace or a decision you have taken yourself in starting your own business, the thought of just getting out of bed, wandering over to a workstation and straightaway starting work is very appealing. No commuting to and from the office and working times to suit your personal circumstances.

But is home or flexible working right for you personally, or good for your boss as an employer? Well there are several advantages and disadvantages. Home or flexible working brings new responsibilities for both the employer and employee. Equally with advances in mobile technology it has never been more simple to set up your own business to work from home.

An Increasing Trend

From an employers standpoint, allowing employees to work at home on either a full or part-time basis may bring a range of business benefits, from increased productivity, greater staff motivation to effective use of your premises. Advancements in mobile technology contributes enormously to the increase in opportunities for working at home.

The spread of home working using the internet or telephone opens up a new range of possibilities with regards to the way a business works and structures itself. Computers, mobile phones, broadband and mobile broadband all play a role. For the individual, becoming self employed and working from home has also never been easier. If you have a laptop and mobile phone the opportunity is there, it’s just deciding what you want to do. So home working is becoming a way of life for many individuals and businesses, but what is home working?

Some employers will offer selected employees the opportunity to become a teleworker, whereby an employee can undertake their role from home utilising various types of technology, which is provided at the employees home by the employer. The employee will remain in touch with the business and other teleworkers. Some businesses, for example the utility companies who require gas, electric and meter readers, will class employees undertaking this type of work as teleworkers or outworkers.

Some individuals opt for the self-employed work life. The self-employed will operate their business from home, offering a product or service such as web development or business consultancy from home. In these types of roles, the individual can often plan their day to suit their own needs. I know one web developer who often works well into the early hours of the morning as this is when he feels most productive.

Others such as a painter and decorator, plumber or gardener, whilst providing their services away from the home, use home as the office for paperwork such as pricing future jobs and preparing invoices. I know of several painters and decorators who work Monday to Thursday, but use Friday’s to go out and price up future potential work. That is one thing to bear in mind when setting up as self employed, you need to allow time to find or prospect for future work.

Some types of work are more suitable for flexible working than others, the following list is not exhaustive, but will give some guidance:

  • Telesales and Marketing
  • Customer Services
  • Professional services & consultancy i.e. HR Administration & Accountancy
  • Certain types of administration work
  • Data input
  • Creative/Graphics
  • Writing, editing, translation and research.
  • I.T. Support & Programming

Many of the above have a common theme and that is that as long as you have access to a computer and a phone, you can undertake almost all of these tasks from home.

The shift towards home working does not mean employees only work from home. Splitting time between the workplace and home is the most productive solution, as you want employees to attend meetings, therefore keeping them informed and involved. Continued face to face interaction within the business remains a key requirement.

With the introduction of flexible working regulations, employers now have to seriously consider employee requests to work flexibly from home, especially if they have parental responsibility for children under 16 years old, disabled children or they are carers for other adults with disabilities.

Employers and individuals also need to consider what equipment will be required to ensure that an efficient business operation and working environment is set up.

Many accessories can complement office furniture for the office or home environment.

The Pros and Cons

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of an employer allowing employees to work from home or use their home as a base for at least part of the working week? It’s clear there are a number of benefits to the employer:

  • Staff Retention is increased
  • Wider pool of applicants to recruit from e.g. disabled people who prefer to work from home.
  • Productivity gains through having fewer interruptions and less commuting time.
  • Reduced stress and sickness increasing staff motivation.
  • Savings on office space and facilities.
  • Sales staff closer to clients, rather than being based at the office which could be miles away.
  • As with life if there are advantages then there are also disadvantages to home/flexible working:
  • Management of staff and monitoring performance
  • Possible deterioration of key skills and quality of work.
  • Capital costs - training and providing suitable equipment, this could include adaptations to meet Health & Safety standards or meet the needs of disabled workers.
  • Difficulties maintaining staff development and upgrading of skills.
  • Information security risks
  • Increased telecommunication and I.T. costs
  • Sense of isolation and communication problems amongst home workers.
  • Staff morale and difficulties in maintaining team spirit.
  • Home working may not be suitable for certain types of jobs.

One thing I particularly miss is the Monday morning office banter about what you did at the weekend of how your football team has fared compared to others. Often the camaraderie that is unique to an office where you get to know people well over many years is also lost where home working becomes an option.

Are You Suited o Home Working?

Having identified the types of work that is suitable for flexible working, the employer must satisfy themselves that employees are suited to this type of work. It’s likely they will need a number of skills in key areas to allow them to work away from base.

  • Time management and self discipline
  • Motivation
  • Communication
  • Technology

We must make it clear that flexible working is not suitable for everyone and care should be taken, because allowing one person to work from home will set a precedent that others will want to follow. Others will see an attraction to working at home particularly on a lovely summer’s day, rather than being stuck in an office. I must confess that as I write this article, I am sitting in our summer house at the bottom of the garden with the laptop on a glorious summer’s day in June.

An employer you must have a clear idea of how home/flexible working could fit in with the needs of the business. A set of house rules need to be established and maintained, i.e. priority is given to requests from parents of young or disabled children. My wife for example, plans her day around the hours of taking the children to school and collecting them later. She maintains that she is extremely focused on what she needs to achieve within those six hours in between. No distractions or idle chit-chat that will occur in an office environment.

In some cases the employer is legally obliged to seriously consider requests for home/flexible workers. Employee with parental responsibility for children aged 16 or under, or disabled children who are under 18 and receive disability living allowances can request a range of flexible working patterns from their employers, this includes the right to work from home. There are similar rights for employees who are carers of adults.

The introduction of flexible working can also lead to an changes to employee contract terms and conditions. In a majority of cases an employee’s place of work is listed in the written schedules of their employment contract. It’s important that when an employee starts to work from home it may be necessary to review and amend their employment contract.

The following is a list of contractual aspects an employer should consider when implementing a home/flexible work policy:

  • Stated hours of work
  • Identify core times when employees undertake to work and/or are contactable.
  • Extra duties or responsibilities that may need to be assigned in addition to those already agreed
  • Identify the terms regarding the supply and insurance of any equipment that may be required, these should clearly state ownership and use, especially that its not to be used for personal use.
  • Clearly identify what the employer will reimburse to cover additional expenses the employee may incur, its especially important to identify the calculation method when costs are shared i.e. utility bills and telecommunications
  • Procedures to be put in place if either the employee or employer wishes to terminate the home/flexible working arrangement.

Allowing flexible working the employer should remember that they still have health and safety responsibilities for people who work at or from home; and you are likely to have to provide and maintain equipment for employees to use, these include:

  • Workstation complete with suitable task chair
  • Filing cabinet, shelves or storage
  • PC/Laptop with office software, email and broadband internet connection
  • Dedicated business telephone line
  • Printer & fax machine
  • Stationery and Office Supplies

Whilst working at home you may wish to create a more luxurious environment where executive office furniture is likely to create the feeling of luxury and a enjoyable work environment.

IT equipment and software can be expensive so it’s important to ensure it meets your genuine business need and is compatible with your existing systems. Technology changes almost daily and with today’s advances the establishment of virtual teams where employees work together despite working at home can be set up easily and at reasonable expense. These teams could be two employees talking over the phone or you could use more hi-tech solutions like high speed internet, instant messaging, webinar and video conferencing.

Providing all this kit and equipment it is important to ensure your business insurance cover is extended to cover home workers, as their home insurance is unlikely to cover this, however they should check with their insurer and extend their policy to include working from home.

Workers who undertake home working should check with their local council and mortgage company the position regarding using their home as a work base, and whether they may have to pay business rates for the portion of their home they use as an office. Some self employed businesses will involve use of a vehicle which will need to be parked up at certain times of the day. For example painters and decorators and builders are likely to utilise a transit van or pick up truck in the work. You should therefore ensure that neighbours will not be offended by having the vehicle parked in the street or to block light out of their homes. If you are to park a vehicle at home, let the neighbours know, it may save a lot of hassle later.

The employer needs to ensure that employees take care of business equipment and information in their possession, it’s important to establish procedures to be followed if any item is damaged or lost, especially data and intellectual rights.

We all agree that home working offers a wide range of benefits to both the business and employees, but it needs to be carefully managed to be successful. Procedures should be put in place for managers to monitor and assess home workers, this is the most significant managerial challenge an employer will face. It can be helpful to measure their effectiveness in terms of output rather than the hours of work. Agree set goals and deadlines for particular projects, and ensure these are being met, give feedback promptly and sensitively if things go wrong.

Ensuring home workers have access to training can prepare and help employees develop the necessary skills they need. For staff who work alone a sense of isolation is one of the main factors most likely to make home working fail, therefore it’s important to ensure procedures are put into place to make people feel part of the team, these should include:

  • Frequent two-way feedback sessions about work and work related issues
  • Regular scheduled visits to the workplace
  • Inclusion in social activities for home based workers.
  • Clear procedures to be followed and contact lists if things go wrong.

When the employees job is entirely home-based from the start, make sure their initiation is undertaken at your premises, this helps the home worker focus and be productive if they have a chance to establish a clear idea of the people they will be working for. The most successful home workers are those who have worked from the business premises previsouly.

When I decided to work at home, I had to locate someplace I could buy office chair plus other office furniture to get myself set up.

A Brief Health & Safety Obligations Check List for Home Workers

If you use your home as your main business workplace, you must carry out a health and safety risk assessment to identify any possible hazards to yourself, workers, visitors and other members of your household.

Possible hazards include:

  • Using work equipment at home, including electrical appliances
  • Your workstation set-up
  • Handling loads
  • Hazardous substances and materials
  • Psychological hazards, such as stress or loneliness
  • Fire
  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Excessive noise or vibration

Slips, trips and falls are one of the most common causes of injury in the work place. Even something we take for granted on a daily basis, such as walking up and down the stairs, should be regarded as a risk to safety. Evaluate whether a hazard is significant and if it is, whether you have taken enough precautions to make the risk as low as you reasonably can.

You need to consider:

  • Your home and those who live there - including vulnerable persons, e.g. children, the elderly, and new and expectant mothers
  • The work done in your home
  • The equipment in your home
  • Emergency procedures
  • First aid provision

Five steps to a health and safety risk assessment

  1. Identify any hazards.
  2. Decide who might be harmed and how.
  3. Assess the risks and remove them or, otherwise, reduce them as far as is reasonably possible.
  4. Record your findings.
  5. Check the risks regularly and take further steps if needed.

Conclusion

With advancements in mobile technology, working at home has become far easier to do. It can offer a very balanced way of life and the rewards can be great. In the current economic climate, many who have been unfortunate to suffer redundancy or reduced hours are considering setting up their own business to work at home. Having worked in the corporate world for over twenty years and just suffered redundancy, it is certainly an option to consider.

But working at home needs to be considered carefully. Is it right for you? Is it right for your employer? What impact will it have on your homelife? Many advantages, but also many disadvantages and bear in mind the health and safety requirements and risks. Your health is important so choosing the correct office furniture to meet your needs is a must for any home worker to ensure you have the proper facilities for home working.

For years a friend of mine worked from home with his desk in his living room and eventually he realised that he could never get away from work, which is as important as doing the work in the first place because we all need time away from work.

If you are lucky enough to really love your work the temptation can be to do it all day long. Eventually this can lead to burn out and can also take away some of the pleasure of working, even if it is something you really love. Therefore it is important to have balance in your life, even more so when you work from home. Some suggestions to help to achieve this are to make sure that when you have lunch, for example, remove yourself from the work space and don’t eat at your desk, get some separation from the work when you are not doing it.

Remember that just because you work from home it doesn’t mean that work has to take over your life either.

Learn How To Pick Up The Best Ladies Car Insurance Deals

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Are car insurance rates lower for women than for males? In brief, the answer is yes. But are ladies better drivers? What are the details which affect the premiums for ladies car insurance?

As unpleasant to men as it may be there’s loads of proof to support the conclusion that lady drivers drive more safely than men, spend much less time behind the wheel of a car than men, and generally drive less fast. As a result when accidents sadly happen they tend to be much less severe than when males are the drivers.

Women cause less injury in accidents. This is but one more reason why car insurance firms consider ladies to be “safer” drivers. Obviously, much less harm to cars results in smaller claims and lower prices for insurers. Once more, it isn’t personal-it is business. Whereas the explanations are debatable, men are inclined to drive extra aggressively than ladies do.

It’s important to know that ladies can both be implicated in car accidents, and might cause them as well. This will seem as obvious as saying that cars have wheels. Nevertheless it is essential to remember this fact, because it is nonetheless plausible for women to have excessive rates for their car cover. If they’ve obtained driving penalty points for speeding, their rates shall be higher. In the event that they’ve obtained points for at-fault accidents, their charges will probably be higher. Well, you get the picture. The bottom line is that men and women alike ought to drive with caution.

Pest control in Liverpool, Bootle and Crosby

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Pest Control in the Liverpool Area has seen a lively and brisk start (2010) which is very surprising given the relatively cold (weather of this last winter|winter of 2009/10}.

Pest controllers were kept busy with the usual city centre rat calls throughout the winter of 2009/10, but the relatively cold early part of the year has already seen ant infestation reported.

The wet summers of the last few years were not to the benefit of the hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, ants & bees) but 2010 looks like it is going to be a busy year for ant callouts.

Often ants build their nests under the floors of homes and inside cavity walls causing an army of foraging ants to infest food store areas.

However it is at their mating time when they can be most annoying as they release winged queens and males which then fly off to mate.

The release of thousands of these winged ants inside houses can be horrific indeed.

A fairly new pest was quite numerous in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area last year, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).

It was rare for pest operatives in Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire to meet these pests until recently but they seemed to arrive from nowhere in 2008 and already this March has seen reports of these insects in large numbers.

These beetles have a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, known as woolly bears devour natural fibres and can do great damage to carpets and natural fabrics. They can be a difficult and persistent pest to get rid of.

Those who work in in pest control note that Bed Bugs are continuing their come back in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area, often arriving as hitch-hikers in the suitcases of home-coming holiday makers.

Often the first reaction of unfortunates who realise that they have been infested with these horrific,blood-sucking insects is to get rid of the old beds and buy new.

This is an unneccesary error as despite their name bed bugs not only hide in beds and in an infested bedroom will be found everywhere within around five yards of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical and telephone sockets and the new beds are instantly re-infested.

A lot of people mistake bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye. They both take a different type of pest control

They dine solely on blood which they take from their sleeping victims. People often associate bed bugs with insanitary conditions but nothing could be further from the truth, they do not need squalor, their food is you!

Up to the end of April 2010 Harrier & Liverpool Pest Control are offering a twenty-five percent reduction on their guaranteed ant treatment.

This revolutionary new treatment which is guaranteed for three years, extendable indefinitely in further three year chunks by a low cost re-treatment every three years, can be carried out in most properties subject to satisfactory, free

For the summer of 2010 Harrier Pest Control are guaranteeing a fixed price for getting rid of wasps nests in the the North West area of just thirty two pounds.

7 Reasons Why DVDs Make Better Resell Rights Products

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Acquiring the rights to resell a product is a quick and easy way to get yourself into business . . . and product developers have been quick to recognize this by offering an endless array of information products with resale rights in ebook format.

A reseller can purchase the rights to an ebook and have the product available for sale on the web literally within a few minutes.

Unfortunately, most people find ebooks to be unprofitable for several reasons:

1. The popularity of the reseller model, ease of entry and low cost of distribution means that hundreds and sometimes thousands of licenses will be sold for any one ebook title.

2. The popularity of ebooks among product developers means there will often be several (and sometimes dozens) of competing titles available on the same topic . . . each with hundreds of resellers.

3. The ease of entry means that ebook licenses are usually the first (and only) time many buyers delve into the wonderful world of product licensing, and such buyers have little or no understanding of how to market the product.

Inexperienced resellers quickly conclude that the only way to find buyers is to offer the product at the cheapest price. As a result, the market value of the ebook collapses as resellers compete to offer the lowest price.

DVD resell rights on the other hand, have several characteristics which make them an attractive alternative:

4. DVDs have a high profit/cost ratio

5. DVDs have low duplication/inventory costs

6. DVDs are easy to package and ship

7. DVDs require no after sales support

Furthermore, physical products that you can hold in your hands have a higher perceived value than digital products . . . and DVDs vs. ebooks is a prime example of this.

And in the final analysis, consumers would much rather sit on their couch and have a subject matter expert show them how to do something via the visually stimulating medium of television than have to wade through the same material in a written format.

You can find a fine example of the type of license available in this DVD resell rights promo video at YouTube.

Audio Options for HDTV

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

HDTV innately provides a greater sound quality simply because the sound of HDTV is digitally transmitted. The difference in sound between an HDTV television and an analog television is quite noticeable. In fact, it is directly comparable to the difference between the music on CD?s compared to the music on audiocassette tapes.

The difference in sound quality provided by HDTV televisions and programming does not, however, end there. Many HDTV programs are also broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, but to take full advantage of this technology, it is necessary to have the right equipment.

What is Dolby?

Dolby technology has been created by Dolby Laboratories, Inc. This technology is the most recognized provider of digital audio technology. In addition, Dolby Laboratories is known for its reliable and superior products. For these reasons, Dolby Digital Surround has become the standard for HDTV. Many television manufacturers substitute their own surround sound systems, but they are hard pressed to live up to the reputation and performance of Dolby. Therefore, it important to check the specs on an HDTV television before purchase in order to ensure that it uses Dolby Digital Surround.

What are my options?

When using Dolby Digital Surround Sound, there are three options for set up. The first option is to purchase a television with high quality center channel speakers, woofers, tweeters, and Dolby technology installed in the television. With this option, it is unnecessary to purchase addition equipment to take advantage of Dolby Digital Surround Sound.

Another option for taking advantage of the Dolby Digital Surround Sound with an HDTV is to connect an external set of surround speakers to the television. With this option, the surround sound set up includes a front pair of speakers, a surround pair of speakers, a center channel, and a subwoofer. Sometimes, the front speakers are ?powered towers.? This means these towers include subwoofers.

The placement of these speakers is very important for the quality of the surround sound. The Center Channel Speaker should be centered either above or below the television. The Front Left and Right Speakers should be placed in an arc formation in line with the Center Channel Speaker. The Surround Left and Right Speakers, on the other hand, should be placed to the left and right sides behind the listening position. Many people choose to wall mount these speakers.

The third option for taking advantage of the Dolby Digital Surround System included in an HDTV television is to use an external set of front speakers can be connected to the HDTV television. This configuration is useful if there is not enough room to set up the external surround sound system and the HDTV does not come with Dolby Digital Surround installed. This isn?t true surround sound, but it is a viable alternative to those who can?t take advantage of the first two formats.?

How do I hook up my other entertainment equipment?

The audio and video outputs of the DVD or VCR can be connected to the AV receiver?s video outputs. If a separate DVD and VCR need to be connected, one can be connected to the VCR1 connection and the other can be connected to the VCR2 connection. The AV receiver?s VCR video and audio outputs should then be connected to the audio and video inputs of the DVD and/or VCR. In this way, the DVD and/or VCR will be able to record video signals that come through the AV receiver and the VHS tapes and/or DVD?s will be able to be viewed on the HDTV.

To take full advantage of the Dolby Digital Surround Sound technology, one of the video outputs of the DVD player and/or VCR needs to be connected to the AV receiver. The digital coaxial audio or digital optical connection must also be connected to the AV receiver.

How do I connect my CD player?

A CD player can be connected to an AV receiver. The CD player?s digital audio outputs can be used to connect the CD player to the AV receiver. A CD-Recorder can also be connected the AV receiver by using the Audio Tape Record/Playback input/output loop connections. In this way, the CD-Recorder will be able to function much like a standard audiocassette deck.

What else will I need?

Besides the basic electronic equipment needed to set up Dolby Digital Surround Sound, it is necessary to have connection cables. This includes video, audio, and loudspeaker connection cables. These cables need to be at an appropriate length in order to set the speakers in the proper position for optimal surround sound quality.

Truth about getting fit and toned

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Try imagining the following

There you are, on the beach in that amazing swimsuit lapping up all the attention!  You are looking dynamite in that thight sexy pair of jeans?

Imagine sitting there tanning those hard abs

To desire these things is only natural. Yet why is it that they seem so far out of reach and impossible?  You  recognize that you require it, but that dynamite body never seems to happen for you.

Many so called experts will tell you that you just aren’t working hard enough.  That you have to quit being so lazy and exercise more. But is this really the truth?

I must admit that I once shared the viewpoint of many of those so called experts.  I too believed that weight loss was a matter of calorie counting and busting your butt at the gym.  However, my many years of experience have taught me that this simply is not the case.  That losing weight and looking great is, in fact, a very simple thing to accomplish.provided that you have the correct information. Without the correct information, you will struggle to lose weight regardless of how hard you work at it.

So what’s the correct information?  The most important thing that you want to know in order to create the body of your dreams is that “you are what you eat”.  That is to say that your diet is the #1 factor for experiencing easy weight loss and a gorgeous figure!

I know what you’re thinking…”I’ve heard that before”; “That stuff never works”; “Boring”…

But what if everything you’ve ever heard about diet is completely false…?

Isn’t it true that when you think of “diet” you tend to think of starving yourself or putting yourself through some incredibly demanding eating regiment?  But why?  Could it be that it is what you have been led to believe…?

The weight loss industry has made dieting into just another item on a list of many for purchase…”You can use this diet or that pill and you will lose weight.”  One more weight loss item equals a lot more profits!  Dieting is being sold as a product, which is why nearly all who buy-in to fad diet programs for easy weight loss end up in a worse state than before they began…

Any product specifically designed to produce weight loss will fail in the long run!

Why?  Because lasting weight loss isn’t something that can be purchased!  It’s the result of a lifestyle choice…

What’s the choice?  Your diet - meaning what you eat day in and day out.  This is the key to easy weight loss!  But most people don’t even consciously choose their diet.  They simply react to what’s available along to moment they are hungry.  This is why the drive-through is so poplar.  It’s the easiest solution to a short lunch break…

In order for you to achieve your dream figure you must stop living in reaction and take back your right to choose!  When you make a conscious choice to make your diet a lifestyle perhaps you may begin to notice the results that once seemed so far away come into plain view.

Once you have made the choice the only other thing you have to know to generate phenomenal results is what the best diet for weight loss really is? And although the question of best diet has been strongly debated by many “experts” the answer is beyond contestation.
